You need to set the DXDATA environment variable to include the directories
where the sample data is stored (dxsamples-4.0/data).  You can also
set the DXROOT environment variable
to specify the DX root directory.  Check out Appendix C of
the User's Manual (they have it in HTML format) for a complete listing
of environment variables; it sounds like that's pretty
much what you're missing.  For a list of some of the basic environment
variables and brief descriptions, you can go to http://www.scripps.edu/~wbriggs/env_vars.html
